Since 2005, 5th grade students at Kadima Day School have organized their school’s Shoes That Fit program to help kids in need of new shoes in the San Fernando Valley of Southern California. This month is dedicated to the theme of “Do not stand idly by” at the Jewish day school. “Our Kadima goal is to collect 120 shoes for two schools that have kids who don’t have shoes,” says 10-year-old Orel. “Don’t stand idly by. Get involved and make a difference!”

On November 7th the LA Kings and Shoes That Fit delivered 100 pairs of new athletic shoes to students at Cimarron Elementary School in Hawthorne, CA.  In addition to the shoes distribution for the most in need students, every child at Cimarron was given the opportunity to participate in a street hockey clinic the Kings Chariot Crew conducted on the campus for four hours.  Just imagine the joy of a child who may have received his first pair of new shoes and played his first game of hockey.  Certainly a great day of firsts that will hopefully provide the inspiration and motivation needed to stay in school so he can reach his full potential.

OnMedia in Des Moines, IA, held their annual golf tournament on September 20th, kicking off their 15th anniversary with Shoes That Fit. OnMedia is one of our largest chapters; they engage the entire Des Moines community in their Shoes that Fit efforts. “We love this program because it helps kids feel better about themselves in a learning environment so they can concentrate in school,” said Bob Montgomery, Vice President/General Manager of OnMedia. Good luck and best wishes for the best Shoes That Fit year ever, Des Moines!

For nearly twenty years, Doug Forde has been an avid supporter of Shoes That Fit as Senior Partner, Forde McGovern and Associates.  Though the California Sporting Goods Associations' 18 Annual Sportsman Helping Children Pheasant Hunts, Doug and his colleagues have helped raise funds to support Shoes That Fit and four other nonprofit organizations.  Because of their commitment, we have been able to help thousands of children throughout the years.  Now enjoying retirement, Mr. Forde continues to be a valuable asset to Shoes That Fit having recently introduced us to our first source for wholesale footware.  Fostering this relationship and more like it, will help us reach our goal of doubling the number of children we help over the next five years.   When we are finally able to say, "This year we helped 200,000 children across the USA" it will be because of dedicated friends like Doug.  From all of us at Shoes That Fit, thank you for your years of service and for bringing countless smiles to children all across the USA.

On October 25 Shoes That Fit teamed up with the Chris Paul Family Foundation to provide 354 children with a new pair of shoes! Chris Paul streamed live from the event on TNT.  To watch a copy of the live streamed video click here.

Congratulations to Sharon and Stewart Levine of Scottsdale, AZ! Their Shoes That Fit - FATE Group chapter (Named in honor of their fathers, Frank and Nate) just passed the 8,000 mark in number of shoes donated to schools in and around Phoenix. We are so proud to be associated with you both!

For the past two years, Shoes That Fit has organized teams for the Holiday Half Marathon and 5K races at the Pomona Fairplex in Pomona, CA.  Our supporters who love to run/walk have done a fantastic job raising funds and awareness for our organization through this effort.  This year the 5K will be on Saturday, December 10th and the Half Marathon on Sunday, December 11th.  Shoes That Fit is not spearheading the teams this year as we are in event planning mode for several 2017 events, which will celebrate our 25th Anniversary.  Be on the lookout for more information on how you can participate in next year's festivities. Several of our supporters will still participate in the Holiday Half Marathon and select Shoes That Fit as their charity of choice to benefit from the funds raised.

You may click here if you'd like to take part in the 5K or Half Marathon and run/walk on behalf of Shoes That Fit!

As we begin an exciting new year, we’d like to highlight a few of Shoes That Fit’s accomplishments and milestones made possible by our donors and volunteers in 2015:

The Village Marketing group (local Claremont, CA merchants) and community members hosted two events; Spring For Shoes and Shoes For School. These events, now in their 11th and 9th years, provided over 400 local students with new athletic shoes, socks, backpacks and assorted school supplies. Mike Manning, owner of The Last Drop Café, did a wonderful job coordinating both events.

Shoes That Fit welcomed several new board members; click here to view our complete Board of Directors roster. Also joining us was Rebecca Korduner, Development Director. We are thrilled to have these unique individuals join our team.

Through the generous financial support of funders, Shoes That Fit continued to expand our reach to help more children in need. Thank you to Nordstrom, Inc., Ludwick Family
Foundation, Annenberg Foundation, Kenneth T. and Eileen L. Norris Foundation, the Chris Paul Family Foundation and Fashion Footwear Association of New York, to name just a few.

Our volunteer Bob Montgomery of OnMedia in Des Moines, IA has been helping children in need through Shoes That Fit for 14 years! Bob and his team host a successful annual golf tournament to support their Shoes That Fit work and 2015 was no exception, raising nearly $15,000! Watch this video to see Bob and his OnMedia team of supporters in action.

Shoes That Fit has once again been accredited by the Better Business Bureau’s Wise Giving Alliance as having met their 20 rigorous standards for charity accountability.

As a grant recipient of the Chris Paul Family Foundation, Shoes That Fit was a featured charity at NBA player Chris Paul’s annual Celebrity Server Dinner where he, along with other NBA players and celebrities, acted as servers. Shoes That Fit Executive Director, Amy Fass and Director of Corporate Engagement, Nekeda Newell-Hall, were both in
attendance.

LAPD 77th Street Community Police Station hosted Operation Shoes From Santa which delivered more than 1,000 pairs of new athletic shoes to local Los Angeles, CA children in need. Shoes That Fit was a proud partner of this fun-filled event for the holiday season!

With a team of nearly 40 runners, #TeamShoesThatFit participated in a fun Holiday Half Marathon and 5K race at Fairplex in Pomona, CA. Our team goal was to raise funds and awareness to help 1,000 local children receive new shoes during the holiday season. Over $18,000 was raised through our team’s fundraising efforts and the support of the following generous team sponsors:

Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center, Claremont Lincoln University, Jeff Stark and Associates, Claremont Sunrise Rotary, Foothill Transit, Perera Construction, The Claremont Club and Vulcan Materials. Also appreciated were the In-Kind donations from Claremont Craft Ales and Trader Joe’s-Claremont.

Roni Lomeli will be stepping down as executive director of Shoes That Fit at the end of January 2014. "Roni has been the award-winning leader and driving force behind Shoes That Fit's extraordinary success," said Shoes That Fit board member and former chair Ralph Shapira. With many accolades and awards bestowed upon her over the years, including her most recent Town & Country magazine and Longines watches’ prestigious "Women Who Make a Difference" award, Roni is credited for building Shoes That Fit into a national charity that has given over 1 million pairs of new shoes and other needed items to children in need in hundreds of communities and schools across America. Here is a message from Roni to all of our donors, volunteers and supporters.

Letter from the Executive Director

Dear Friends of Shoes That Fit,

It is with mixed emotions that I announce my retirement as the Executive Director for Shoes That Fit effective January 31, 2014. While I am happy to begin a new chapter of my life, I am saddened to leave the role that I have cherished and enjoyed for more than a decade. I’ve found that the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work and love doing it. It has certainly been rewarding to “make a difference” in so many children’s lives and to have the opportunity to meet and work with so many wonderful people who share our vision that every child deserves shoes that fit.

I learned that my role at Shoes That Fit was about creating lasting relationships with friends, volunteers and donors, bringing them into the Shoes That Fit family, and then watching as they came to realize that their support could change young lives forever.

I believe now is the right time for me to move on. I am leaving Shoes That Fit in solid position to continue making a difference for the children we serve. Last year’s milestone of having provided over one million pairs of shoes and other critical items to children in need was very poignant and something I will always cherish.

The Shoes That Fit Board of Directors has decided to appoint Amy Fass as my successor. I am very pleased with their decision as Amy brings a fresh perspective to the organization and will continue to further our mission. Amy is a longtime supporter of Shoes That Fit and she has been working with the organization as a consultant for the past year. Amy is committed to the mission of Shoes That Fit and shares the same passion and excitement for helping the children we serve.

Thank you for your support and friendship over the years. I will continue to be involved as a volunteer and supporter of Shoes That Fit forever. Shoes That Fit will always be near and dear to my heart.

Roni Lomeli
Executive Director

Now in  its fifth year, this award celebrates women who make a positive impact in children's lives. Roni was honored at an awards dinner hosted by tennis legend Stefanie Graf in New York City and will be featured in the February 2014 issue of Town & Country Magazine. "It’s hard to believe that it has been five years since we started honoring women who make a difference in partnership with Longines," said Town&Country Publisher and Chief Revenue Officer Jennifer Levene Bruno. "We have so many readers committing their lives to worthwhile causes and it’s a pleasure to be able to honor them in this way.”

As the summer season comes to a close and autumn nears, Shoes That Fit volunteer programs across the country have already geared up for Back-To-School! With our programs now in 42 states across the country, there are countless hours of preparation to ensure that thousands of students return to school this year in comfort and with dignity, better prepared to learn and play. New shoes that fit help these deserving children fit in with their peers, participate in physical activity, concentrate on learning rather than their circumstances and enjoy a renewed sense of pride and self-esteem. We are truly thankful for our donors, volunteers and supporters whose donations ensure that going back to school for these children is a positive experience; we could not do this work without all of you! Here's just a sampling of some of the wonderful work being done:

Blues & Brews Craft Beer Walk hosted by the Village Marketing Group in Claremont, CA was a great success! Proceeds from this event help fund the annual Back-To-School campaign in the Claremont Village during August.

In early July, The Bonita Springs, FL chapter of Shoes That Fit prepared hundreds of bags filled with new shoes, socks & clothing thanks to the generosity of volunteers and proceeds from their annual luncheon.

Irwindale Chamber of Commerce (CA) held their annual month-long shoe drive in June to fill the shelves of our emergency warehouse in Claremont, CA. They collected cash donations as well!

Dahl's Foods throughout Des Moines, IA began collecting $1 and $5 donations in support of our Shoes That Fit chapter in their community.

The annual Concerts Under the Stars series hosted by the Hafif Family Foundation was a sell out (as usual) and 100% of our suggested ticket donation price came directly to Shoes That Fit.

Each year during July, a golf tournament is hosted by OnMedia Ad Sales in Iowa (a division of Mediacom) to support the back-to-school shoe purchases made by volunteers Bob & Regina Montgomery and their team of dedicated co-workers! This year's turnout was the best to date: 129 golfers and net proceeds of $15,000!

Generous grants from the De Falco Family Foundation and Vons Charitable Foundation were received to provide new shoes for children in need in the states of Washington and California this fall!

Joyce N. and her friends at the Unitarian Universalist Society in Ormond Beach, FL loaded up the back of their van with new shoes & socks for children in their community just in time for back-to-school.

Last, but certainly not least, Susan Pearson of The Bath Workshop in Claremont, CA worked tirelessly along with her employees to ensure that 250 local Inland Empire (CA) children in need returned to school with new shoes, socks, backpacks and school supplies! This monumental effort took place during July and was a huge success thanks to Susan, members of The Village Marketing Group and our generous community!

While enjoying the rest and relaxation summer brings, many of you might be wondering how you can help Shoes That Fit from the comfort of your own home, poolside, beachside or lakeside. Will you take just 3 minutes and tell others about your experience with Shoes That Fit? Your personal story and feedback helps us gain visibility and may help us improve our program. Please share your experience at the Great Nonprofits website.

Great Nonprofits is a website to help people find, review and share information about nonprofits (similar to Yelp for businesses!). It takes only a few minutes and you'll be helping to spread awareness of Shoes That Fit and our mission of providing new shoes to children in need so they can attend school in comfort and with dignity, better prepared to learn and play. Thank you for believing as we do that every child deserves shoes that fit!

With Sincere Thanks,

Shoes That Fit has been nominated for a $75,000 grant from DSW Designer Shoe Warehouse to help us provide new shoes for children in need. This grant will allow us to expand our programs so children in need can attend school in comfort and with dignity, better prepared to learn and play. We need your votes and we need you to share this info!!!

Simply visit the DSW facebook page, click "Like" then click on the green "Shoe Lovers Care" tab and vote for Shoes That Fit - That's it! Please vote every day from June 6-19th!

We've discovered a few helpful tips to make voting easy:

  • DSW did not design this contest for voting with your cellphones! (so sorry!)

Do you remember the excitement and anticipation of each new school year? The joy you felt shopping for new shoes and eagerly awaiting the first day of school so you could proudly show them off? Maybe your experience was similar to today’s deserving children in need. Despair and anxiety build at the thought of another school year where you don’t fit in and get teased and humiliated.

One in five children will find it hard to fit in at school because of their poverty. Back to school is here and you can make a difference for a child in need through Shoes That Fit by providing new shoes that allow them to attend school in comfort and with dignity, better prepared to learn and play. You can alleviate their embarrassment.

•    Your $1,000 gift helps provide shoes for an entire classroom
•    A $100 donation will help 4 children in need of new shoes
•    Your donation of $25 can help provide one new pair of shoes and socks

You can change a child’s life - who will you help? Your gift of new shoes allows a child to simply fit in with others, making a visible sign of their poverty disappear. Torn, stinky, ill-fitting shoes tell the world that something is wrong. New shoes can inspire hope and confidence and propel a child towards success at school. A simple pair of new shoes has the power to make a child excel.

“Dear Shoes That Fit, I want to thank you for my shoes. I am very happy, you guys helped my life. You are too kind. Sincerely, Meeko”

Erica was a child helped by Shoes That Fit here in California. She spoke at our recent Sneaker Ball event in April 2012, where we celebrated our 20 year anniversary and the delivery of the one millionth pair of shoes. She is a high school graduate, an inspiration to her younger sister and brother and has a job that helps support her family. To Erica, shoes meant more than just shoes—this was a gift from someone she didn’t even know. Erica attributes her success to someone who cared enough to give her a simple pair of new shoes long ago.

School teacher Kathy wrote: “Just wanted to share with you the EXCITEMENT when Zeharia BOUNCED back into my classroom after she received her new shoes!! It was just heart-warming. Those shoes could not have come at a better time - I have had to hot glue her shoes together 3 times over the past week. Her new shoes arrived this afternoon. Thank you so much!”

Imagine what the future holds for a child you help. When was the last time you were able to give a life-changing gift? Maybe this will be the first time. Your continued partnership with Shoes That Fit is necessary as we work to help children in need go to school and focus on their studies rather than their circumstances. It doesn’t take much and is a truly meaningful act of kindness.

Please donate online today or call our office at 888-715-4333.
Thank you for believing as we do that every child deserves shoes that fit.

Sincerely,

Roni Lomeli, Executive Director
