On December 4th, every student at Monroe Elementary in Santa Barbara got a big surprise – new shoes!
All because one couple saw the need in front of them.
Santa Barbara typically conjures up thoughts of beautiful beaches, mountains, and nearby Montecito where many celebrities reside. It can be easy to overlook the poverty within the area. There is a huge income disparity in Santa Barbara County where 23% of children are growing up in low-income families. These families are struggling with high rent, low wages, and providing for growing children. Covering basic needs can be very challenging when finances are so tight.
Liisa and Andrew Primack are acutely aware of this reality. They have supported Shoes That Fit for 30+ years beginning when they lived in Claremont, CA where Shoes That Fit is based. As longtime supporters and new Santa Barbara residents, they were eager to make a difference for children in their new city.
They organized Santa Barbara Steps Up for Monroe, a crowdfunding campaign to help 345 kids at Monroe Elementary in Santa Barbara Unified School District. Together, they raised over $10,000 for brand-new shoes.

In conjunction with Shoes That Fit, Step Up for Monroe gifted every student at Monroe Elementary brand new sneakers! Santa Barbara Mayor Randy Rowse and Supervisor Laura Capps also were in attendance handing out sneakers to students.
