What do a gecko, a trailblazing NASCAR driver, and the city of Danville have in common? The correct answer is Shoes That Fit!
In January, Shoes That Fit partnered with the GEICO Philanthropic and Wendell Scott Foundations. Over 500 brand-new pairs of sneakers and socks were distributed to the students of Schoolfield Elementary, located in Danville, Virginia. This was Shoes That Fit’s fourth year partnering with GEICO.
“We are thrilled to continue our partnership with GEICO for a fourth year! We are proud to collaborate with a partner who believes in strengthening communities by investing in children, and we are truly thankful for their continued partnership,” said the CEO and Executive Director of Nonprofit Shoes That Fit, Amy Fass.
Strengthening and working with the community is what the Wendell Scott Foundation is also all about! Having these three powerhouse community builders partner together was an absolutely perfect fit.
The Wendell Scott Foundation is a nonprofit organization that carries on the legacy of trailblazing NASCAR driver Wendell Scott. Scott is a Danville native and the first African American NASCAR driver to win a race in NASCAR’s premier division.
“We’re just really grateful that this is happening for the students here. This is just an extension of the love that the Wendell Scott Foundation has for all the youth that live in the Southside of Virginia. My grandfather’s legacy means so much to so many people. We want to do something that will allow that legacy to continue to live on just through gestures and providing community support like this,” said Wendell Scott Foundation CEO Warrick Scott.
The Wendell Scott Foundation provides programs such as Steer into STEM and Camp Cultivation. Steer into STEM provides educational support for underrepresented groups in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) with a strong emphasis on hands-on learning. Camp Cultivation is a 3-day, overnight program that provides high school students with STEM-related activities such as simulation, augmented reality, virtual reality, workshops, and labs.
Thank you to GEICO Philanthropic and Wendell Scott Foundations for your amazing community work and partnership. Thank you to Danville and Schoolfield Elementary for giving us an opportunity to partner with your community.
